Special congratulations go to workshop member Rachel Rowlands who won the Hachette Award at the Northern Writers Awards. Rachel has worked so hard on her novel about Lizzie the elephant who contributed to the war effort by working in the Sheffield steelworks. We love to see our writers succeed and couldn't be more thrilled to share this news! Read more about her journey here.

We have a wide range of workshops and Meet-ups both online and in-person at our lovely space in Orchard Square in Sheffield. Whether your genre is poetry or fiction, or if you’re just writing for pleasure and wellbeing, we have something for you. Here are a few of the new offerings for September.

Raquel will be facilitating a new Members-only Meet-up for Short Story writers and Beverley will be hosting a monthly feedback session for members on Wednesday afternoons. We’ll also be adding a Screenwriters Meetup, and September sees the return of Beverley’s Writing Club for children (aged 9-13). Keep an eye on the website for details of all new events.

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers - a series with Lorna Partington

This series of 3 classes starts on September 6th with Focus on Story (developmental editing).

Self-editing is a three-stage process that begins with developmental editing. At this stage, you're aiming to find greater depth and emotional impact within your story by focusing on the core components of premise, character, structure, tone, and theme.

This online class will combine teaching, discussion, and exercises to help you explore the potential of your draft story. Developmental feedback for a short story (6000 words max.) is available for an additional fee (limited availability).

There will be two other classes in this series:

• October 4, 2023: Self-Editing Your Fiction: Focus on Style (line/stylistic editing).

• November 8, 2023: Self-Editing Your Fiction: Focus on Readability (copy editing).

It's recommended that you attend all sessions to get the best insight into the self-editing process, but you can attend single sessions.
